Child Gifted Test
The usual method of determining giftedness in children is through the administration of certain standardized tests. There are child gifted test exams that vary depending on the age group of the child. First you should think about your motivations for testing your child. The best reasons to test are to obtain details regarding your child's educational requirements. Although gifted children may be strong in many areas, they may also have weaknesses that should be addressed. Testing can help determine these areas.
Also, testing can help determine whether or not your child qualifies for the gifted and talented program at his or her school. If there are any learning disabilities they can also be picked up by standardized testing. If your child is determined to be gifted by their test results this can be helpful when it comes to advocacy for modifications to their curriculum. Gifted children often need a modified curriculum because the one they are using currently does not challenge them. If a gifted child is stuck in a class that is far below their intellectual capabilities they may even get bad grades or become disruptive in class. Not all children experience this, but some do.
One thing you should know is that your child will probably not be tested for gifted and talented capabilities until they are at least four years old. The average age for testing is between four and eight years of age. Experts feel this is the best age for gifted testing because before the age of four and after the age of eight results may be more inaccurate. Now that you know why children should be tested and at what age, let's look at the different tests that may be administered.
There are two main child gifted test types. They are IQ tests and achievement tests. The standard IQ test is designed to measure intellectual ability while achievement tests focus on what has already been taught. In school, the common IQ test given is the Otis-Lennon. You may want to request an individual test, such as the WISC-IV test which is recommended for potentially gifted students. One thing you should know is that private testing may run you anywhere between two hundred and seven hundred dollars.
