Education Gifted Children

When it comes to education, gifted children have special needs in many cases because the curriculum offered in their normal classroom is not stimulating or challenging enough for them. This is often true for the intellectually gifted. Intellectually gifted children are tested using certain types of IQ tests and exams in group and individual settings. There are child development and educational specialists who can administer gifted testing and help you decide on the right course of action for your child. Some gifted children do well in their regular classroom while others are better suited to a special program.

There are talented and gifted programs in schools that are specially designed to meet the educational needs of these students. Many children become bored and may even act up in the traditional classroom setting because they feel out of place. It is unfortunate but often a fact that gifted children are treated differently by their peers because they are overachievers. They may even be teased or referred to as the 'teacher's pet' which can be very devastating for a child seeking peer acceptance. Because of this some gifted children may downplay their abilities or get into trouble in an attempt to fit in.

Therefore, it is extremely important parents work with the school staff and an educational specialist experienced in the needs of gifted kids. They can test your child for giftedness and help you decide upon an academic and extracurricular strategy that helps nurture your child's strengths while supporting them emotionally. Many gifted children enjoy talented and gifted (TAG) programs because not only is the work more challenging for them, they get to interact and make friends with other children within their intellectual range. Gifted children who feel accepted by parents, teachers and friends are more likely to do well in school and at home.

To learn more about education gifted children need, consider doing some preliminary online research. Parents who educate themselves regarding talented and gifted youngsters are better equipped to communicate with the school and help make important decisions regarding the well being of their gifted child. Of course no parent should go it alone, there is a lot of support for both gifted kids and their parents including the school system, various organizations and groups, and even your child's pediatrician.
