Gifted Characteristics

There are a variety of gifted characteristics that not all parents and even educators are aware of. It is important to educate yourself on the traits and qualities many gifted children display in order to best help your child grow and thrive both at school and at home. While some of these traits are very evident and obvious, others may be mistaken for something else entirely. This is why understanding both the clear and subtle signs of giftedness is important for both parents and teachers.

First and foremost, gifted kids are usually above their grade level in one or more subjects. While this may be recognizable in some, it may not be so clear in others. In some cases, gifted kids actually do poorly with academics because they are bored with the curriculum. They may act out in class or become disruptive because it is hard for them to sit through lessons on something they already know. In addition, they could even misbehave in an attempt to downplay their giftedness if it is something that's already been recognized.

While some children are proud of gifted and talented abilities, others are embarrassed and just want to fit in with the rest of the class. Many gifted kids are what you might call hypersensitive. They may cry easily, become angry easily and be easily upset by things like loud noises or large crowds. This is not always the case, but sometimes is. Your gifted child may display an arrogance towards other children or even their own parents. These are traits many parents fail to recognize as part of being gifted. Every child is different, however, so if you suspect your child may be gifted it is crucial to have them tested.

Testing may be done by a school teacher or counselor, or administered by a child development specialist skilled in working with gifted kids. There are several different types of IQ tests and other tests that are administered when determining the level of giftedness in a child. If your child displays special talents in the areas of arts or athletics, you may want to speak to a teacher, coach or counselor about nurturing these natural abilities. For toddlers this can be as easy as providing materials for them to explore, however school age children may be placed in a special class or extracurricular program that recognizes and respects their advanced abilities.
