Gifted Curriculum
If you are the parent of a gifted child you should be aware of how gifted curriculum may vary from regular school curriculum. A gifted child is one who has been officially deemed gifted after rigorous screening and testing by their school or other educational professional experienced in recognizing academic giftedness. The screening and testing may include various types of exams including the standard IQ test given by age range.
Once a child has been recognized as gifted it is usually necessary to modify their current curriculum to meet their needs. It is often the case that a gifted child will become bored in the average classroom because they have already mastered concepts other students have not. Therefore it is important to give these students more challenging materials so they will remain interested and keep learning throughout their years in school. Not only are gifted children sometimes bored in class, they sometimes become disruptive because they are frustrated or feel out of place. Therefore the school must provide an alternative for these children that meets their particular needs.
Many schools do this with a program called TAG, or talented and gifted. TAG programs are especially designed with the academic, emotional and even social needs of gifted and talented children in mind. There may even be individualized curriculum developed for each child's individual needs. It all depends on what areas your child excels in and what areas he or she may need help with. Not all gifted children excel at every subject, every child is different. A good curriculum plan is one that works in conjunction with your child's strengths while helping them develop any weak areas.
For parents curious about the gifted curriculum, there are lots of online resources and books available. However the best course of action is to speak with your child's teachers because they are the ones who work with your child every day. Not only can the staff at your child's school discuss gifted screening with you, they can also go over the curriculum they feel is best suited to your child's academic and developmental level. Maintaining honest, open and regular communication with your child's teachers is imperative for the educational and social well bring of your gifted child.
