Gifted Resources
If you are a parent of a gifted child or a child you think may have gifted and/or talented characteristics, you should know there are plenty of helpful gifted resources that provide advocacy and education for both gifted/talented youth and their parents. Not only can your child's school be helpful in the support and education of gifted kids, there are other organizations that may also provide a great deal of help, support and information for parents and their gifted children. One such organization, Mensa, is well known for its support of both adults and children with gifted capabilities.
American Mensa is a national organization with over 50,000 members ranging in age from 4 to 100. Internationally, more than 100,000 people belong to a Mensa chapter. The members of this group come from all walks of life but share the distinction that they scored in the top two percent on a standardized test that measures intelligence. They offer a website where you can learn more about their organization as well as what to do if you think your child may be gifted. For example they advise parents take a look at particular reading materials and other organizations especially for children who are gifted.
Another top resource for gifted kids and their families is NAGC. This acronym stands for the National Association for Gifted Children. Unlike Mensa, NAGC caters to children only rather than children and adults. This association offers special publications and information for parents of gifted children and has a membership program. On their website you'll find membership information, resources and so much more. It is definitely worth checking out if you are the parent of a gifted child.
One of the best gifted resources may in fact be your child's school. Many schools have screening programs as well as TAG or talented and gifted programs for these children. TAG programs help kids interact with other gifted and talented children while challenging them academically. In addition to any gifted programs your child's school may offer, speak to a guidance counselor or teacher about what the school can offer as far as testing and education for a child who is gifted. There are private schools in various states around the country especially for gifted children, however you may have to do some searching to find out the closest one to your location.
