NAGC

The NAGC stands for the National Association for Gifted Children and is an organization designed to provide education, support and advocacy for children designated as gifted and their families. According to this association, there are around three million gifted children in the United States as of right now. Often, many of these children are not recognized as gifted or guided to their full potential because of the wide variance in styles of both teaching and learning. One goal of the National Association for Gifted Children is to establish standards and help raise awareness about the needs of gifted children.

There are 8,000 members of this association who work for the best interests of these gifted youth. Their duties include training educators, encouraging parents and even speaking to policy administrators regarding support for gifted children and why this support is so important for the future. These gifted youth are potential future leaders and must be recognized as such. The association publishes several educational papers for parents and teachers such as Parenting for High Potential, a quarterly magazine for parents who strive to help their gifted child learn and grow.

In addition to becoming a member of this association, parents of gifted children should consult with both the pediatrician and their child's school. Some pediatricians will refer you to a child educational specialist who can counsel you and educate you further on the subject of parenting a child with special abilities. Your child's school may want to test your child for the TAG program, which stands for Talented and Gifted. These programs are made for students whose standardized test scores and other screening indicate intellectual and/or artistic giftedness.

Both NAGC and TAG are programs that not only educate parents but also provide learning and socialization for the children. Gifted children need to socialize with both non-gifted and gifted peers within their age group. This allows them to feel comfortable in different social circles. Without the right socialization and guidance a gifted child may feel like an outcast in the classroom because of their giftedness. Association conventions and events are perfect opportunities for kids and parents to socialize with other families and learn interpersonal skills in addition to valuable information.
