Young Gifted Children
While school age children have resources available from their educational facility to help recognize and deal appropriately with giftedness, young gifted children may not have this benefit. If you are the parent of a child who is not yet of school age but who you think is showing gifted and or talented characteristics the first step is to learn more about how to recognize these characteristics and where to go from there. A good first start is to find a book, website or even literature from the pediatrician that explains the average abilities and behaviors by age range.
There are many different resources that contain this information. If you have read over the basic benchmarks for your child's age group and feel they are far advanced, it may be worth your while to explore the possibility that your child is gifted and/or talented. However what should be done about it depends on the age of your child and what is recommended by their pediatrician and/or any educational professionals they are working with such as preschool teachers or day care workers if they attend such facilities. If not, parents at home can do a lot on their own to help their child.
For example, let's say your toddler should be reading basic board books with beginner words. If he or she can read these books and prefers more advanced reading material you should by all means provide it to them. Maybe your child shows a big interest in music. Encourage that all you can by providing them with instruments and their favorite songs. If your child is a budding Picasso, make sure your home is stocked with a wide variety of non-toxic art supplies for toddlers. By allowing your youngster to freely but safely explore their gifts you will better prepare them for elementary schooling.
Although many young gifted children are not yet in school, when they get there challenges may arise if the proper attention is not paid to their abilities. For example, a child in Kindergarten who is intellectually advanced over his or her peers may get bored with learning and want to play. Even older kids may act out and become disruptive because of boredom or even to fit in and downplay any 'special' labels placed upon them. Working with a counselor, pediatrician or school staff member experienced in gifted kids is a must for parents who want the best education and socialization for their child regardless of age.
